Professionals and students continue strike in New Delhi

Sunday, May 21, 2006

New Delhi — Almost 10,000 people marched to Jantar Mantar from Maulana Azad Medical College in an anti-reservation rally on Saturday. Doctors and medical students say they will continue to strike and protest, despite an appeal from the prime minister to call off their agitation.

Students from Delhi University and medical colleges around the capital, parents, lawyers, and accountants joined the striking medicos, under the banner of ‘Youth for Equality’.

The students and their supporters want total rollback of a proposed quota-hike for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in elite educational institutions, and a review of the present reservation policy. “There are very less seats in the post-graduate streams compared to the undergraduate courses. Hence the reservation move will affect the future of majority students,” said student leader Praful Raj.

The students have support from many groups. They were led by the Youth for Equality, an AIIMS initiative, while United Students, a DU and JNU group, IIT alumni, RWAs (under the banner of United Residents Joint Action), Resident Doctors Associations from various government and private hospitals, Chartered Accountant’s Association, students from private universities like IP, and parents of agitating students also joined in.

Students from medical colleges in Rajasthan, Orissa, Gujarat, Punjab and Karnataka also took part in the rally. Students and doctors say the government has showed “scant regard to the sentiments of the students”, who have been protesting the proposed quota-hike for OBCs in elite educational institutions.

The students had appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to set up a non-political judicial committee to review the existing reservation policy and sought an audience with him to discuss the issue.

My Boyfriend Doesn T Like My Dog: Time For A New Boyfriend?

My Boyfriend Doesn t Like My Dog: Time for a New Boyfriend?

    by

    Ron Ayalon

So you think you ve met Prince Charming. You ve been on a lot of dates, gotten to know him, and think you want to see where this goes but things come to a grinding halt when he comes over for the first time and meets your dog Sharon. He shows a serious dislike for her and even is outwardly mean to her, right in front of you! Not everyone has to be a dog lover, but this can pose a serious issue for you and your relationship with him. What s the best thing to do at this point? Is it him or the dog, or can a compromise be reached?

We all know that future in-laws and boyfriends don t always have the most stress free of relationships, but when your boyfriend doesn t even get along with your dog Sharon, it s a more unique situation. But it s actually an issue many a girl has had before and usually involves some deeper psychological issues your boyfriend needs to work out. There can be several things at play here and it s important to figure out where the problem is coming from in order to solve it, assuming you can. It s often tricky to deal with because your boyfriend may not even be able to understand where his own feelings stem from, but if it s a relationship worth saving, he ll be willing to sit down and figure it out with you.

Some Obvious Issues to Look At

Most of the time, a boyfriend s dislike for your dog may arise from jealousy of Sharon. It seems silly for him to get jealous of a dog, but when he sees you get all lovey and cuddly with her instead of him, it doesn t matter what species she is she s getting your love instead of him, and a part of him doesn t like that. He may be a bit selfish and possessive when it comes to you and not want to share you with anyone. When he wants to have time with you cuddling on the couch watching a movie and you spend most of your time cuddling and cooing to Sharon instead of him, his confidence takes a hit. So he may react in anger at Sharon, yelling at her or trying to banish her from the room. He doesn t have the same emotional attachment to Sharon that you have. To him, she s a dog and thus not as important as he feels he is, but you obviously feel different.

He may also have issues that stem from his own childhood that have nothing to do with Sharon or you. As with most problems in relationships, the problem can be solved by sitting down for a talk and being completely honest with each other. Ask him how he feels when Sharon is in the room with you and why specifically he doesn t like her. Reassure him that you value the relationship and want things to work, which is why you re having this talk now. See if you can reach a compromise. Maybe when you re watching movies or having dinner, you can let Sharon have some outside time, but in other situations your boyfriend should work harder to try to include her. Remind him that you ve had Sharon for a while and she s a part of your life. After all, if he wants you in his life, he s going to have to take all of you, and that includes Sharon.

If he seems understanding and willing to compromise, it s a good sign. Try to show Sharon a little bit less attention when he s around so she ll get used to being a bit more independent from you, which will ease stress with you and him. Just as he has to compromise about your time, Sharon must too. Just because she s a dog doesn t mean you always have to give into her.

However, if he s not willing to compromise, it may be time for a new boyfriend!

Automobile sales in the United States down sharply

Automobile sales in the United States down sharply
    Posted in Uncategorized | October 5th, 2018

    Tuesday, February 3, 2009

Sales of automobiles in the United States fell as much as 35% in January, compared to the same month a year ago, as manufacturers reported their January sales.

Ford Motor Company NYSEF sales dropped 42% last month from the previous year. General Motors NYSEGM reported a 49% decline. Chrysler was hardest hit among the domestically owned manufacturers with a plunge of 55%.

The decline in sales has not been limited to just US manufacturers. Japanese automaker Toyota NYSETM reported a 32% drop in US sales from a year earlier, Nissan MotorsNASDAQNSANY dropped 30%, and Honda NYSEHMC sales dropped 28%.

Subaru and South Korean Hyundai Motor Company LSEHYUD were two of the few auto firms that reported an increase in sales. They posted gains of eight and fourteen percent, respectively.

On an annual basis, sales overall have also been plummeting. Industry-wide US car sales dropped 18% last year to 13.2 million automobiles.

GM announced today that it will offer voluntary buyouts to 22,000 employees in the US, in an effort to reduce its expenditures.

Last month, GM and Chrysler were given loans worth US$17.4 billion from the government after they warned of imminent bankruptcy.

Afghanistan suicide bomb leaves seven Americans dead

Afghanistan suicide bomb leaves seven Americans dead
    Posted in Uncategorized | October 3rd, 2018

    Thursday, December 31, 2009

A suicide bomber attacked an American base in the Khowst region on the Pakistani border of Afghanistan, leaving seven American CIA officers dead and six injured. No American or NATO military personnel were killed or injured in the attack on Forward Operating Base Chapman.

It appears that the suicide bomber, reportedly wearing an Afghan National Army uniform, blew himself up in either the gym or the dining facility of Base Chapman.

In a statement on the Voice of Jihad web page, the Taliban claimed responsiblity for the attack, alleging 20 “CIA employees” were killed in the incident.

The Chapman Base is a converted military base which is now being used for civilian reconstruction operations, although military personnel are still located on the base. Camp Salerno, the main base in the Khowst province, has been the target of many attacks in recent weeks.

Recent attacks have been focused on foreign civilians, such as an incident in October in which 7 foreign and 3 Afghan civilians were killed in an attack at a UN guest house. The CIA has not lost this many operatives in nearly 25 years and the last time CIA agents were killed was in 2003.
