Death toll from tsunami in Southeast Asia increases
Correction — May 8, 2018 This headline incorrectly locates the tsunami in Southeast Asia; it was in the South Pacific, as stated in the lede.

Thursday, October 1, 2009

A tsunami that was generated in the South Pacific by a powerful undersea earthquake has killed at least 110 people, according to authorities.

The majority of the fatalities occurred in Samoa, where rescue workers say at least 84 people were killed. Another 24 people are confirmed dead on American Samoa, while at least seven fatalities have been reported in nearby Tonga.

The US Geological Survey says an 8.0 magnitude earthquake struck early Tuesday local time. It generated waves that devastated coastal areas, knocked down buildings and sent cars floating out to sea.

Strong aftershocks followed the initial earthquake, with at least one measuring a magnitude 5.6. Tsunami alerts were issued for the entire South Pacific region but were later canceled. Survivors fled to high ground and stayed there for hours.

Several villages were destroyed on the southern Samoan coast of Upolu, which is also home to many tourist resorts.

During a flight on from Auckland, New Zealand to Apia, Samoa, Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi told reporters he was shocked by the disaster. “So much has gone. So many people are gone. I’m so shocked, so saddened by all the loss.”

“The situation is very bad,” said Marie-Francoise Borel, a spokesperson for the International Red Cross, to the CTV News Channel by telephone. “This massive wave has swept across – it’s destroyed villages, it’s destroyed homes, people are in shock.”

The assistant chief executive of Samoa’s disaster management predicted that the death toll in the country could surpass one hundred, saying that searches for bodies in the region are still ongoing.

“They are still continuing the searches for any missing bodies in the area. Some areas have been flattened and the tsunami had brought a lot of sand onshore, so there have been reports the sand has covered some of the bodies. So we need specialised machines to search for bodies that are buried under the sand,” he said.

The communications head for the International Federation of the Red Cross, Jason Smith, told the Al Jazeera news agency that the Red Cross “[…] is working hard through five evacuation centres to provide people with safe places to stay and access to clean water,” estimating that up to 15,000 people in sixty villages were affected by the tsunami.

At the capital of American Samoa, Pago Pago, the tsunami measured 1.57 meters in height. The superintendent of the National Park of American Samoa Mike Reynolds reported four waves as high as six meters. People who experienced the quake said it was long, lasting from 90 seconds to three minutes.

We’re focused on bringing in the assistance for people that have been injured, and for the immediate needs of the tens of thousands of survivors down there.

Pago Pago city streets were strewn with overturned vehicles, cars, and debris. Some buildings located only slightly above sea level were completely destroyed by the waves, and power in some locations is not expected to be restored for up to a month. FEMA administrator Craig Fugate said that “we’re focused on bringing in the assistance for people that have been injured, and for the immediate needs of the tens of thousands of survivors down there.”

“The first federal team members are currently en route to American Samoa aboard a Coast Guard plane and will be providing on the ground assessments once they arrive on the island,” Fugate said. “FEMA, who has provisions pre-positioned in a distribution center in Hawaii, is also preparing to send supplies as needed to help meet the immediate needs of the survivors.”

Didi Afuafi, 28, who was riding on a bus in American Samoa when the tsunami struck, described her experiences. “I was scared. I was shocked. All the people on the bus were screaming, crying and trying to call their homes. We couldn’t get on cell phones. The phones just died on us. It was just crazy,” she said. “This is going to be talked about for generations.”

US President Barack Obama declared a major disaster in American Samoa, and has sent federal aid to support local recovery efforts in the US territory.

“My deepest sympathies are with the families who lost loved ones and many people who have been affected by the earthquake and the tsunami,” Obama said. He had earlier pledged in a written statement to give a “swift and aggressive” government response to the disaster.

“I am closely monitoring these tragic events, and have declared a major disaster for American Samoa, which will provide the tools necessary for a full, swift and aggressive response,” Obama said.

During a Wednesday appearance near Washington, D.C., the president said the US was ready to help its “friends” in neighboring Samoa and throughout the region.

In Tonga, seven people were confirmed dead and another three missing, after waves struck Niuatoputapu, a northern island.Acting prime minister Lord Tuita said in a statement that “according to information gathered from Niuatoputapu so far, seven people are confirmed dead, three missing and four with very serious injuries,” Lord Tuita, the acting prime minister, said in a statement. “It is reported that the tsunami did serious damage to the village of Hihifo, which is like the capital of the island.

“The hospital on the island is reported to have suffered major damage; telephone communication has been cut as a result of damage to equipment and facilities on the island; homes and government buildings have been destroyed,” he said.

An airplane was reportedly chartered by Tongan authorities to determine the amount of damage done to Niuatoputapu, but wasn’t able to land.

Boko Haram attack in Nigerian city kills at least fifteen

    Monday, December 28, 2015

According to witness reports, Boko Haram gunmen and suicide bombers killed at least fifteen people in an attack in the city of Maiduguri, Nigeria yesterday, before the military drove them off.

Locals reported hearing gunfire as evening prayers ended at local mosques. The military pushed back the militants, who were on trucks and firing at civilians with guns and grenade launchers, with heavy weapons fire. Amidst the fighting, suicide bombings were carried out.

A local resident Sheshu Mala said that during the attack, “all the residents in the area fled their homes to other parts of the city.” As people fled, two female suicide bombers reportedly detonated themselves in groups of people.

Government sources say ten other suicide bombers have been killed.

The militant group Boko Haram started in the city of Maidugari, where the attacks took place; they lost the territory three years ago as the military retook the city.

The news came after another Boko Haram attack on the village of Kimba killed at least fourteen people on Friday.

Bucharest, Romania — The city centre of Bucharest, the capital of Romania, is set to get a major facelift due to a real estate project called Esplanada (The Esplanade), which will be constructed by TriGranit Development Corporation. The total investment in the project will be greater than 800 million euro and aims to build a modern commercial pedestrian area in downtown Bucharest, with several shopping malls, office buildings, hotels and dwellings. It will be the largest real estate program in Romania since the fall of Communism in 1989.

Bucharest is currently looking at possibilities to improve its appearance and rebrand itself as a lively, creative and vibrant city. Many initiatives have sprung up to improve the city, including the organisation of CowParade later this year. Additionally, the old town centre will be restored. Due to Romania’s current economic boom, several other major construction projects are taking place.

Bucharest City Hall has blocked traffic in the city center due both to the old town restoration and to the Esplanada project.

Life Cover A Guarantee That Your Mortgage Gets Paid Off

Posted in Financial Planners | July 28th, 2018

Click Here For More Specific Information On:

    By Josie K Anderson

A mortgage is a serious financial commitment that usually takes many years to repay. Anyone with a mortgage should consider what would happen if they were to die before this debt has been repaid. This is where decreasing life cover can play an important role.

For most of us, a mortgage is the essential source of funds that enables us to buy a home. We commit ourselves to making monthly repayments over many years. But what if the mortgage holder dies before the loan has been fully repaid? Would those left behind, family and loved ones, have sufficient resources to pay back the lender? If not, would the property have to be sold to obtain the necessary funds? Even if the deceased’s nearest and dearest were able to pay off the loan, what impact would that have on their finances?

There is an obvious need to ensure that funds are available, on death, to pay off the mortgage. This is where a decreasing life cover policy can play an important role. This type of policy pays out a lump sum, on death or diagnosis of a terminal illness, and the amount payable decreases over the term of the policy. This is ideal for those with a repayment mortgage, where the amount of loan repayable also reduces throughout the mortgage term. Decreasing life cover is also less expensive than level life cover (where the amount payable on death stays the same throughout the term of the policy). Cover can be taken out by one person or by two people jointly. For joint policies, the life cover will be payable on first death.

The lump sum payable, under a decreasing life cover policy, will often reduce at a fixed rate set by the life cover provider. This amount may be more or less than the actual mortgage debt on death. Some providers offer to match the outstanding loan amount subject if specific conditions are met. These conditions are, typically, that the loan has stayed as a repayment mortgage, that all loan repayments have been made and that the mortgage value or term have not been increased. Many policies also offer a free period of cover, subject to certain conditions, between the exchange of contracts and completion stages of a mortgage.

Another common feature is to allow policy owners to increase their amount or term of cover when they either move to a new home or make home improvements. The increased cover, subject to certain conditions and limits, requires no further evidence of health, occupation or pastimes. The overall cost of the cover will also increase.

So, for anyone with a mortgage, it makes extremely good sense to ensure that appropriate life cover is in place. This will ease the financial burden faced by their loved ones, should the worst happen. The cost and features of decreasing life cover make it the obvious choice for mortgage protection.

Scores feared dead in Indonesian landslides after heavy rain

Scores feared dead in Indonesian landslides after heavy rain
    Posted in Uncategorized | July 28th, 2018

    Wednesday, December 26, 2007

Heavy rains in western Indonesia have triggered landslides across the region that have killed dozens of people. Meanwhile, other areas were devastated by major flooding, with water reaching two metres high in some locations.

Search and rescue chief Eko Prayitno in Java told reporters that police, soldiers and volounteers were working together to attempt to reach survivors, some digging with their hands or traditional tools. Heavy equipment is available and efforts are underway to get it into place, he said, but blocked roads are making such efforts difficult.

Prayitno also said that a single landslide in the Karanganyar region buried 61 people who were attending a dinner to celebrate a successful clean up of a house affected by another landslide, which had caused no injuries. “They were having dinner together when they were hit by another landslide… At least 61 people were buried.” Landslides affected the region over a four hour period from 01:00 a.m. to 05:00 a.m. local time. Meanwhile, seventeen people are feared dead in the neighbouring district of Wonogiri, which has also been hit by landslides after twelve hours of nonstop torrential rain.

Andi Mallarangeng, spokesperson for president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, told reporters “The president sends his deep condolence, and has ordered Home Minister [Mardiono] to inspect the scene [in Karanganyar] and monitor the emergency responses.”

Many fleeing residents have attempted to salvage their possessions, with some using tyres to float television sets and refrigerators to dry ground. Another single massive slide in Tawangmangu, a mountainous resort, buried 37. Metro TV News was told by an eyewitness, identified only as Karsidi, that “Those people were gathering for a tea break during communal works after the rains, and suddenly the land collapsed onto them.”

The affected regions spread across Java, Sumatra and Sulawesi. The population distribution in Indonesia has worsened the situation, with many people living on river flood plains to utilise the fertile soil and many more living in inaccessible mountain regions. The total death toll is estimated at up to 81 people, and eyewitnesses and local media report that thousands of homes are affected.

Landslides are common in Indonesia, where large-scale rainfall is a regular occurrence. This is often exacerbated by deforestation. However, Heru, head of the local disaster coordinator agency in Karang Anyar, commented that “The forest in the area is thick,” and consequently he did not believe deforestation was a causal factor. The region he is responsible for has recorded 36 deaths and 30 more buried in thick mud near the banks of the Bengawan Solo river. Meanwhile Julianto, another provincial government official, said “The landslides took us by surprise. This is the first time in the last 25 years anything of this scale occurred here in Central Java.”

Julianto also commented that thousands of people displaced from their homes by flooding and landslides have been forced into temporary accommodation in buildings and tents provided by emergency response teams.

Today’s disasters coincide with the third anniversary of the Asian tsunami, which killed an estimated 230,000 people. A tsunami drill on Java was unaffected as the seasonal poor weather did not have an adverse affect on the area of the drill.

Federal Debt Relief Grant Can You Qualify For A Federal Debt Relief Grant?

Posted in Financial Services | July 28th, 2018

    By Gressly Stevens

Why are federal debt relief grants not advertised heavily? The government loves to offer grants for all types of things, but they will not tell you about them because if the money is not claimed, then they get to use it for something else. If you are drowning in debt, then getting a federal debt relief grant is possibly an option you have to help you with some of your debt. This is one of the many types of government grants available and you might qualify. Here is some more information about getting a grant to help you get out of the financial bind you are currently in.

Many grants are available for those in need and for those that have a large amount of debt. These are no longer limited to minorities, single mother, females, and native Americans. Just about anybody with debts can qualify for some type of aid or grant.

The wealthy actually donate many millions to these grant foundations so that they can stay in a certain tax bracket and that money is there to help those in need and those with outrageous amounts of debt. You can qualify for a grant and get out from under your debts for free. That is the great thing about grants. You never have to pay them back so they are free money to use for what you need.

The first step in applying for a federal debt relief grant is to create a grant proposal. This will include a statement that will explain how you intend to use the money, how much money you need to pay off your debts, your personal information, and depending on the donor you may have to include the income of the working adults in your household and what your monthly or yearly expenses are for you and everybody in your home. You will also have to include any dependents you have and possibly some other information depending on the donor.

Also, if you have applied and received a grant for something else or for your debts in the past, then you need to include this information as well. Next, whoever is reviewing your proposal will decide whether or not a grant will be issues and you will either receive notice of your grant being issued or being denied. If you have applied and been approved for a grant recently, then your chances may be lower than someone that has not ever received a grant before.

You can apply right online for federal debt relief grants and they are pretty easy to find as well. Make sure you are very thorough with your application and tell the truth about everything. The money is there to help you and they want to give it to you, but you have to apply first. It is also strongly advised that you get some type of debt counseling or credit counseling so that you do not go back down the same road because you will not be able to get another grant as easily as the first one.

Local officials in the town of Dera Ghazi Khan in Pakistan said on Tuesday that at least twenty people were killed after a suicide car bomber attacked the house of a provincial governor. The Al Jazeera news agency reports that seventy people were injured from the blast.

According to Siddiq-ul-Farooq, a spokesman for the Pakistan Muslim League, the bomber drove his car into the wall of Dost Muhammad Khosa’s home, damaging it. Khosa and his relatives, however, were not at home, Farooq added. The house was reportedly close to a market, which also suffered from the explosion.

A reporter for Al Jazeera, however, noted that it wasn’t immediately clear if Khosa was intended as a target in Tuesday’s attack.

“There are many people trapped in the rubble after the powerful blast demolished some 10 shops […] The rescue work is under way and we fear the toll may go up. It was a terrorist activity, similar to those being carried out in other parts of the country,” said town commisioner Hasan Iqbal.

A local resident, Raza Khan, was witness to the chaos that resulted after the detonation. “The whole market has collapsed. There is smoke and people running here and there,” he said to the Associated Press. A local health official told Agence France-Presse news agency that “the hospital in the town has been crowded by people looking for their relatives. Rescue efforts are still going on.”
