Search-and-rescue dog that found 9/11 survivor to be cloned

    Thursday, July 3, 2008

A German shepherd who recovered the last survivor of the September 11, 2001 attacks is to be cloned. His owner, James Symington, a former police officer from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada entered an essay writing contest about why his dog should be cloned.

Trakr, the 15 year old German shepherd suffering from degenerative neurological disorder, was the subject of a contest-winning essay about why Trakr should be cloned that was written by Symington. Trakr and Symington received Humanitarian Service Awards from Jane Goodall for their heroics at Ground Zero. Symington is now an actor of film and television, sometimes credited as Peter James.

BioArts International sponsored the essay-writing contest. Five more dogs are to be cloned by its Best Friends Again program. While Trakr will receive free replication, the other dogs will have to participate in an auction with a starting bid of US$100,000.

BioArts is going to send the DNA of the 6 dogs to Sooam Biotech Research Foundation in Seoul, South Korea. A Sooam researcher said that the dog should be born in November.

Despite defectors, U.S. electoral college affirms Trump presidency

The U.S. electoral college voted on Monday to place Republican businessman Donald Trump in the presidency.

In most election years, this is a formality. However, with Trump’s loss of the popular vote by a margin of 2.7 million, allegations of Russian hacking, and concerns, such as those expressed by Texas elector Christopher Suprun that Trump “shows daily he is not qualified for the office,” liberal voters and anti-Trump protest groups had hoped the electors would deny Trump the 270 votes he would need to be inaugurated on January 20.

The president-elect issued a statement: “This election represents a movement that millions of hard working men and women all across the country stood behind and made possible. With this historic step we can look forward to the bright future ahead. I will work hard to unite our country and be the president of all Americans. Together, we will make America great again.”

Trump received 304 of the 306 votes he had been pledged and Hillary Clinton 227 of 232 for a total of seven faithless electors. Five whose constituencies went for Clinton voted for former Secretary of State Colin Powell, Bernie Sanders or Faith Spotted Eagle who opposed the Keystone Pipeline. Two Republican electors, both from Texas, whose votes were slated for Trump engaged in a protest vote, one for Ohio governor John Kasich and one for Ron Paul. Several other Democrats and one Republican who had announced their intentions in advance were either replaced or resigned.

While tradition dictates that electors must vote according to their constituencies, only 29 U.S. states and the District of Columbia actually have laws requiring them to do so, and there is no constitutional or federal law on the matter. In the remaining 21 states, electors are technically permitted to cast their votes as they see fit. No faithless elector has ever been prosecuted.

On Monday, a helicopter accidentally dropped a concrete block weighing nearly 1,500 pounds when it was flying it up to an Austrian mountain for a “ski resort construction project”. The concrete block struck a cable holding a gondola, the one that suffered all of the casualties, although other gondolas reported people suffering injuries from the jolt. The car that was hit fell quite some distance to the ground, up to hundreds of meters. Two more cars started tilting as some people were flung out from these cars.

A least nine people are reported to be killed in the incidents. There are also many injured, some of them seriously. Up to a dozen rescue helicopters immediately rushed to the scene from all over the Swiss alps.

The work was made to make the infrastructure more secure after an incident that happened when a low-flying US marine plane cut through a cable killing 20 people in 1998. This incident will bring into question if those policies saved lives or need to be recast in light of this tragedy.

Moving Is Difficult For Children, How To Help You And Your Child Adopting To The New Environment?

Posted in Real Estate | March 16th, 2018

    Submitted by: G Kharchenko

It is only human nature to miss the things that you liked about your old home, friends, and life. And you will probably even miss the things that you disliked about your old life! For example: After you move you will not remember that your next-door neighbor’s dog was annoying. You will only remember that you miss having a familiar neighbor. It takes time to feel comfortable in a new home and community even after you have chosen what seemed to be the perfect location. When things go wrong in your life, you may even believe you made a mistake in your relocation decision. However, don’t be so hard on yourself! Keep a positive attitude, and as each day passes you will gradually overcome obstacles. You did your homework before the move, trust your instincts and be confident that you made the best decision possible.

Young children are resilient and will usually get excited about moving if their parents act like they are excited about the move. So set the right example! Start by reading children a few positive books on the subject. You can help by giving children a sense of control over their new environment. When possible, let them choose their new bedrooms, and set those rooms up promptly. Young children will adjust to their new surroundings more quickly if their bedroom is put back together as soon as possible, their toys are unpacked, and they know where to find their favorite snacks in the kitchen. They will feel a sense of security knowing that some things in their life have not changed. On the other hand, teenage children may use this opportunity to request that their rooms be completely redecorated. Hooking up the television, DVD player, Xbox, and Internet will get teenagers settled in quickly.

To get children excited about the move, take a tour of the new house, neighborhood, and school. Let them take pictures during the tour so that they can gradually get adjusted to their new surroundings. The more familiar they become with the new community, the less apprehensive and more cooperative they will be during the move. Encourage older children to track down information about the new community on the Internet and to keep in touch with their old friends via e-mail and instant messaging. Help your children to make friends. Encourage them to invite new friends over to your house so you can get to know them and meet their parents. You may find that you have something in common with their parents, which may lead to a new friendship for yourself.

Changing schools can sometimes be traumatic tor children, especially during the teenage years. If you have control over when to move, it is a good idea to weigh the social problems caused by a summer move against the uncertain academic drawbacks of relocating during the school year. The most difficult issue for teenagers is having to give up all of their friends and planned activities. To teenagers, their life stops dead at the very mention of a move, and they perceive no light at the end of the tunnel if their current social life is going to end. They become confused about how to tell their friends that they are moving because they themselves are so confused about the idea of relocation and they do not want to lose the friendships that mean the world to them.

If your children are having trouble adjusting to their new school, call the guidance counselor and ask for advice on how to make the situation better. Encourage your children to talk to you about their grievances. Listen to your children’s complaints, and try to help them through this difficult time. As each week passes, the situation should show improvement. If it doesn’t, don’t give up. Talk to other parents to see if other kids are having the same difficulties (it may only be an age-related problem, such as hormones). If all else fails, seek counseling elsewhere, or look for alternative schools that may suit your child’s needs better.

On October 14, 2008, Canadians will be heading to the polls for the federal election. Liberal Party candidate Sandra Gardiner is standing for election in the riding of Perth—Wellington. A Stratford resident for the last 17 years, she has worked as a Registered Nurse for the last 14, in hospital, long term, and community care settings. She is a member of Registered Nurses Association of Ontario, Canadian Association of Physicians concerned about the Environment, FarmGate5, Common Action for the Restoration of the Environment, Autism Ontario, the Planning Committee for Rotary Respite House, and board member of Optimism Place, the local women’s shelter.

Wikinews contacted Sandra, to talk about the issues facing Canadians, and what they and their party would do to address them. Wikinews is in the process of contacting every candidate, in every riding across the country, no matter their political stripe. All interviews are conducted over e-mail, and interviews are published unedited, allowing candidates to impart their full message to our readers, uninterrupted.

The riding is currently held by Conservative Gary Schellenberger, who was also MP for the previous riding, Perth—Middlesex.
