How Does Debt Consolidation Affect Credit Scores?

By Amy Nutt

In these tough economic times, it is increasingly difficult to manage household finances and pay one’s bills. Income is waning, and the general outlook on the economy is negative. The fact that many Canadian households are riddled with consumer debt doesn’t help. Credit card or other consumer debt can carry very high interest rates, making even the minimum payments difficult to afford. To make matters worse, paying only the minimum amount due each month does nothing to help get you closer to paying off the debt completely. Being in debt can easily make you feel as if you are buried and unable to free yourself. If financial obligations and debt are weighing you down and making you feel buried, you may be considering using a debt consolidation service.

What is Debt Consolidation?

In a nutshell, debt consolidation is a service whereby individuals can take out a single loan to pay off all their various debts. While debt consolidation does not take away your debt, it does improve your situation by simplifying your debt into one single manageable payment. Most importantly, though, debt consolidation loans typically reduce the interest rate paid on your debt drastically.

Another form of debt consolidation focuses more on credit counseling. Credit counselors work as intermediaries between you and your creditors and are able to negotiate settlement of your accounts, many times for less than the original amount owed.

What is a Credit Score?

A credit score is a rating issued by credit reporting agencies that evaluates your general creditworthiness. There are three major credit-reporting agencies that issue credit scores in Canada. The scores are calculated by taking certain factors into consideration.

These factors include but are not limited to:

– Length of employment – Number of credit accounts – Status of credit accounts – Debt to credit ratio – Debt to income ratio

Credit scores are important because financial lending institutions use them to determine whether you are a good “risk” or not. If you have a very low credit score, you are not likely to be approved for a mortgage or other loan. On the other hand, with a very high credit score, you have a much better chance of being granted credit cards and being approved for consumer loans such as home mortgages, auto loans, student loans or personal loans.

Debt Consolidation’s Effect on Your Credit Score

Many people are weary of taking drastic actions when it comes to credit accounts, because every single thing you do affects your credit score in some way. For example, every time you apply for a new credit card, your credit score is affected. If you pay your credit cards on time, (or likewise, late,) your credit score is affected. Perhaps the most relevant action, and the one that causes people to question whether debt consolidation can hurt their credit score is the following. Closing credit card accounts can actually have an adverse effect on your credit score. While you maintain your credit card accounts open, they count as “available credit.” The more available credit you possess, the better you credit score will be.

How debt consolidation affects your credit score will depend chiefly on which form of debt consolidation you are considering. A debt consolidation loan that will allow you to pay your accounts in full and still maintain the accounts open, will not affect your credit score adversely). In fact, this scenario is likely to increase your credit rating. The second form of debt consolidation, however, will have a negative effect on your credit score as you will not be paying the accounts in full, and since the accounts will be closed, you will no longer have that credit. Depending on your situation, the tradeoff may be worth it.

Fall ’08 styles at New York Fashion Week: the ’70s are back

Fall ’08 styles at New York Fashion Week: the ’70s are back

Tuesday, February 5, 2008

The fourth day of New York Fashion Week debuted few daring designs even from designers known for such work. With few exceptions, the overwhelming theme was “old is new” and that the ’70s were even more in fashion than the shows on Sunday suggested. Among the designers to unveil their Fall 2008 lines on Monday were Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Betsey Johnson, Proenza Schouler and a rejuvenated Halston line, under the direction of designer Marco Zanini.

Both global warming and the slowing economy have been cited as reasons for the overwhelming use of lighter fabrics over heavier attire. Also, retro designs and continuing trends have been used in effort to save money, like the tights that were expected to go out of fashion this year. Even in the glamorous world of high-end fashion, money has been tight, and with the world economies in a collective downturn, major designers have been more wary of continuing to churn out the stream of couture designs that past Fashion Weeks have seen.

Proenza Schouler’s show took the ’70s retro theme to a fever pitch, liberally using bows on designs and debuting more retro-era wide-legged pants that were first seen in Sunday’s shows. Zanini’s Halston label also brought back the ’70s, resurrecting old designs that the founder of the line made famous. Since the designer Halston’s death in 1990, many designers have tried to take the label in different directions. Zanini’s unveiling on Monday brought the line back to its Studio 54 roots, while using trenchcoats, sheer fabrics, and cardigans to finish the ensembles with a modern twist.

Betsey Johnson also debuted old and new styles on Monday, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of her fashion label. Copies of her original 1978 one-piece bathing suit as well as some early 1980s fashions started off the show. Her new pieces, such as animal print leggings coupled with a short twill jacket, were perceived as very skintight and criticized for not representing more fuller figures. Johnson brushed off the criticism, noting, “It’s tighter and sexier, but I still believe the girl brings the sex to the clothes…You won’t look sexy in a tight, below-the-knee skirt if you don’t feel good in it.”

The lone daring designer for the day was Carolina Herrera, who discarded the furs she promoted in the Fall 2007 show to focus on a Peter Pan theme, with earth tones and bird feathers. To further the “flying Peter Pan” motif, models donned such designs as a chiffon dress with ostrich feathers and a taffeta gown with a feather waistband.

Oscar de la Renta opted for more traditional blacks, golds and grays, debuting lines for men and women in fabrics he is familiar with. Men were outfitted in tweed while women were fitted in dresses that experimented with embroidery and tulle, both shades of past collections.

New York Fashion Week runs until Friday. Among others, labels Badgley Mischka, Diesel, and Vivienne Tam unveil their newest collections on Tuesday.

Dove’s Real Beauty looks at photoshoot techniques in commercial

    Thursday, October 12, 2006

Dove soaps continues their North American “Campaign for Real Beauty” advertising with a television commercial that explores the alterations that can be done on models.

Labeled “a Dove film”, the commercial is entitled “evolution”. Beginning with a woman walking into a photo shoot. From there, she is primped and plucked by hair and makeup artists, then tweaked on a Photoshop-like program.

The photo-manipulation is then posted on a billboard for the fictional “Easel Foundation Makeup” brand. Two young, teenage girls walk past, glancing at the board.

“No wonder our perception of beauty is distorted” ends the ad in text, “Every girl deserves to feel beautiful just the way she is.”

Dove runs the Dove Self-Esteem Fund as a part of their Campaign for Real Beauty. In the marketing campaign, Dove uses “real” women, instead of professional models, in an attempt to instill self-esteem in their customers.

This continuing promotion, launched in 2004, was on the forefront of a current trend in Western culture to abandon the overly idealised images the media portrays of women. Recently some fashion capitals have mandated minimum body mass indexes for runway models. The top rated comedy in the United States and Canada is Ugly Betty, a series that stars an average girl coping at a fashion magazine. The series is based on Betty la Fea, an extremely popular Colombian telenovela, which has been reproduced internationally.

Only two percent of women surveyed worldwide consider themselves beautiful, according to ABC Good Morning America co-anchor Robin Roberts, whose program debuted the commercial this morning at 8:07 am EST.

The ad is currently playing on the Campaign for Real Beauty’s homepage.

    Tuesday, June 17, 2008

Governor Bobby Jindal, a Republican politician from the U.S. state of Louisiana, appeared on CBS’s Face the Nation on Sunday and said he supports teaching intelligent design (ID) in public school as “the very best science.” Jindal, who was elected governor in 2007, is a Hindu convert to Catholicism who takes the Bible literally.

In his exchange on the Sunday morning talk show, “Some want only to teach intelligent design, some only want to teach evolution. I think both views are wrong, as a parent.”

In a September 2007 debate he supported the view of creationism saying, “Personally, it certainly makes sense to me that when you look at creation, you would believe in a creator.”

Recently, the Louisiana House of Representatives passed legislation, which the National Center for Science Education said “opens the door to creationism in public school science classes.” The bill is currently on his desk.

Jindal is currently considered a possible Vice President candidate for John McCain’s U.S. Presidential campaign.

Darwin’s Ltd. opened a second location of their sandwich shop at 1613 Cambridge Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in late May. It is situated across from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. Previously limited to one location at 148 Mount Auburn Street, the second store seats approximately 30 people and sells sandwiches, coffee drinks, locally made pastries, as well as some produce and snack foods. The establishment also provides free wireless access through the WanderingWifi service. The shop plays music during the day; during this reporter’s visit to the shop, selections played ranged from David Bowie to The Strokes. The store is air-conditioned.

Key differences between the original store and the new one include the unification of the cafe and the sandwich line now behind one counter, handicap accessible restrooms, no beer or wine sold at location, and a lack of a loyal customer base. Although the recent months have been slow, business is expected to pick up with the return of Cambridge area students this autumn.

While the original location of Darwin’s was recently cited for lacking sneeze guards before the kitchen counter, according to the Cambridge Chronicle, the new Darwin’s has acrylic sheets along the front of their sandwich counter. The original Darwin’s has installed the sneeze guard at the kitchen counter the day following citation.

Ten-year-old computer glitch prevents delivery of 1,380 Canadian health results
    Posted in Uncategorized | March 30th, 2022

    Sunday, May 24, 2009

The Saskatoon Health Region in Saskatchewan, Canada recently discovered a fax machine problem which had not relayed almost 1,500 X-rays, Computed tomography (CT) and Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, ultrasounds, and other medical imaging test results to doctors.

The fax machine is part of the automated Radiology Information System. An audit revealed that medical diagnostic tests involving results dating back a decade have been affected by the broken fax machine.

On May 6, a doctor called the health region officials seeking follow up on a patient’s report. Staff who delved into it, found that the report was not sent from the system.

Now, two weeks later, this same patient has still not been contacted by the health region.

“It has taken some time to work with the patient’s physician. That was important — to get more information and more detail because we want that patient’s physician to be involved in the discussion with the patient,” Dr. David Poulin, vice-president of medical affairs for The Saskatoon Health Region, said. “This is a system error and that’s just what it was — an error. This doesn’t reflect in any way on the quality of work regional staff have done and continue to do.”

An internal review revealed that, of 2.2 million diagnostic tests performed, at least 1,380 had not been sent out by the malfunctioning fax machine.

The health region will embark on contacting each of the 1,380 patients and their physicians to make sure that the results have been received and if any health care was compromised.

Patients can also contact the health region via a newly set up hotline to make enquiries.

“We think it would actually be good practice if physician offices could have a system to check whether they have received important reports,” said Poulin, “The common practice appears to be in many doctors’ offices, particularly family physician offices, that they don’t respond to the report until it arrives. So, they basically are waiting for the report to arrive in their office by fax and it’s at that point that they look at it and decide what action to take.”

City Hospital, St. Paul’s Hospital and Royal University Hospital were the three city hospitals affected. Saskatoon has a population of roughly 233,923, and the hospitals also serve the surrounding rural areas.

Ironically the faulty fax machine was discovered the same week that provincial medical officials began to review approximately 70,000 radiology tests conducted in Yorkton. Officials there doubt the competence of the physician who first interpreted the radiology results.

Judges rule patrons may sue nude bars for lap-dance overcharges

Judges rule patrons may sue nude bars for lap-dance overcharges
    Posted in Uncategorized | March 30th, 2022

    Saturday, April 23, 2005

A three-judge Texas Court of Appeals ruling will allow men who were overcharged at nudie clubs to sue for refunds and damages.

The two plaintiffs, Paul Brian Meekey and Michael Fulmer, had their cases heard because they were charged more than a regular lap dance fee when they used a credit card, typically $25 for a $20 dance.

“Texas law is pretty clear that you cannot charge someone extra for using a credit card,” said Sandra Krider, an attorney for the patrons. “The fact that they are strip clubs shouldn’t mean they get away with it.”

A lawyer for the businesses, Rick’s Cabaret and the Men’s Club, argued a case based on the type of employment the ladies agreed to perform.

“Since the dancers are independent contractors and not employees of the club, the clubs are not the ones selling the dances,” said attorney Albert Van Huff.

But the men’s attorneys said the win could potentially become a class-action suit with many hundreds of men claiming their day in court. That could present a problem for other patrons who may not want their name and their use of a credit card at a nudie bar released in court transcripts.

“They are going to want the (strip) clubs’ credit card companies to give them the names of all the different people who have charged dances there,” said Van Huff.

The 14th Court of Appeals, a Texas court with headquarters in Houston, had reversed a ruling of a lower trial judge that this case should be heard before the state Finance Commission instead of in a judicial proceeding. The case was sent back to be tried again.

    Eric Allen, The Truth About Taking Mlm Mainstream And To Record Status}

    Posted in Cabling | March 27th, 2022

    Submitted by: Eric H Allen

Eric Allen is not your typical or traditional MLM top earner, and he is quite proud of this distinction. He has always been one to create his own path in life, centered around his passions and interests. Whether it is working with at-risk youth, coaching the game of basketball, or spending quality time with his family, he had never been one to chase the Almighty Dollar. Although Eric originally pursued a traditional college education in business, and graduated from a top-ranked business school in the U.S., he realized that his life would be more aligned with his values and greater purpose by becoming an inner city high school teacher and basketball coach. After seven years in the teaching profession, Eric received the opportunity to pursue another lifetime goal in getting the opportunity to coach Division One Basketball full time – even though it was a significant pay cut from an already very meager high school teaching and coaching salary. Although he is very proud of the accomplishments he achieved in during this journey in his life, including winning numerous state and national teaching honors, authoring a best-selling book, achieving various coaching recognitions, and, most importantly, making true impacts on the lives of his students and players, he also came to the disturbing realization that his current journey in life as a teacher and basketball coach, although intrinsically fulfilling and rewarding, was never going to allow him to realize the lifestyle or philanthropic goals he had for his family and greater future.

As Eric reflected and prepared himself for a major life shift – even though he was seemingly unaware of what that might entail – the world of network marketing presented itself. Eric, like many, had to break down his false predispositions toward multi level marketing, but decided that this profession offered the most legitimate means to begin to develop a “Plan B” that would ultimately get him to where he wanted to be financially – and he embarked on this pursuit while enduring a very hectic and grueling college basketball coaching workload. These often included 90+ hour work weeks, on campus, in practice, scouting, road trips, tutoring, and a host of other duties and responsibilities.

Eric Allen credits Brian Tracy and other top experts – who he actually chose to go into business with in his primary and only business opportunity – as the reason for his internal foundation for success, and meteoric rise to prosperity in network marketing. Believe it or not, Eric makes more on one month now than he used to make in over TWO YEARS on a teaching salary, and THREE YEARS on a coaching salary! More importantly, he is able to spend quality time with his family and be in a more powerful position to implement concrete changes and programs to benefit the lives of at-risk and disadvantaged youth.

Today, Eric Allen is leading the charge in cultivating a more mainstream and well-respected outlook on the network marketing industry. It is Eric’s conviction that as more and more genuine, success-oriented individuals from all walks of life experience the freedoms uniquely available in network marketing, the industry as a whole will serve to benefit and empower the lives of exponentially more like-minded individuals globally.

Eric’s current overarching mission is to rapidly and ethically legitimize and enhance the image of the industry by embodying and promoting a culture of professionalism, integrity, and true entrepreneuralism. Eric and his wife Casey now live an amazingly abundant lifestyle and are able to give back philanthropically to several causes they are passionate about – all because of their refreshingly straight-up, laid back, and “non-cheesy” approach to network marketing success. Eric is confident in his ability to transform and empower the life of any genuine, ambitious, and coachable person through the wonderful platform of network marketing!

About the Author: Eric Allen is continuing to inspire and galvanize thousands and thousands of like-minded, genuine professionals, both new to the industry and experienced veterans, because of his refreshing approach to prosperity in MLM. His rapid results speak for themselves, and prove that you do not have to be a “cheeseball” to experience all of the intrinsic and extrinsic rewards in the network marketing profession.
