Gay Talese on the state of journalism, Iraq and his life

Saturday, October 27, 2007

Gay Talese wants to go to Iraq. “It so happens there is someone that’s working on such a thing right now for me,” the 75-year-old legendary journalist and author told David Shankbone. “Even if I was on Al-Jazeera with a gun to my head, I wouldn’t be pleading with those bastards! I’d say, ‘Go ahead. Make my day.'”

Few reporters will ever reach the stature of Talese. His 1966 profile of Frank Sinatra, Frank Sinatra Has a Cold, was not only cited by The Economist as the greatest profile of Sinatra ever written, but is considered the greatest of any celebrity profile ever written. In the 70th anniversary issue of Esquire in October 2003, the editors declared the piece the “Best Story Esquire Ever Published.”

Talese helped create and define a new style of literary reporting called New Journalism. Talese himself told National Public Radio he rejects this label (“The term new journalism became very fashionable on college campuses in the 1970s and some of its practitioners tended to be a little loose with the facts. And that’s where I wanted to part company.”)

He is not bothered by the Bancrofts selling The Wall Street Journal—”It’s not like we should lament the passing of some noble dynasty!”—to Rupert Murdoch, but he is bothered by how the press supported and sold the Iraq War to the American people. “The press in Washington got us into this war as much as the people that are controlling it,” said Talese. “They took information that was second-hand information, and they went along with it.” He wants to see the Washington press corp disbanded and sent around the country to get back in touch with the people it covers; that the press should not be so focused on–and in bed with–the federal government.

Augusten Burroughs once said that writers are experience junkies, and Talese fits the bill. Talese–who has been married to Nan Talese (she edited James Frey‘s Million Little Piece) for fifty years–can be found at baseball games in Cuba or the gay bars of Beijing, wanting to see humanity in all its experience.

Below is Wikinews reporter David Shankbone’s interview with Gay Talese.

South Carolina governor Nikki Haley endorses Mitt Romney for U.S. president

    Saturday, December 17, 2011

South Carolina governor Nikki Haley endorsed Republican Party (GOP) presidential candidate and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney yesterday at an event in Greenville, South Carolina. According to The Washington Post, the widely-sought support of the Tea Party-backed Haley reflects a softening of conservative concerns about Romney, who is considered a moderate in the race. He currently trails former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich in South Carolina, which will hold its primary election on January 21.

Haley, who is of Indian descent, is the first female governor of South Carolina. She is considered a possible 2012 Vice presidential nominee and potential 2016 presidential candidate. She said that while there is not a “perfect candidate” for the 2012 race, Romney is “a leader that knows what he wants to do the first day he gets into office.” Haley’s belief that Romney will repeal Obamacare ultimately led to her support.

Romney has remained consistently high in polls since entering the race earlier this year, but has not been able to solidify conservative support, due in part to the view that the health care reform he instituted in Massachusetts was similar to Obamacare. Recently, Newt Gingrich has risen in the polls as the latest anti-Romney candidate, but has come under attack for providing consulting service to Freddie Mac. Gingrich holds a double-digit lead in South Carolina.

According Steve Schmidt, an adviser to John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign, Romney has “weathered a turbulent period and seem[s] to have regained equilibrium in the context of the Gingrich surge.” However, Gingrich supporters do not give much credence to the Haley endorsement: state co-director Leslie Gaines commented, “We have the whole Tea Party support which got her elected.” As a state legislator, Haley also endorsed Romney in 2008.

Haley and Romney are currently on a two day campaign tour of South Carolina on Romney’s plane, which his wife Ann refers to as “Hair Force One”.

Japan earthquake death toll estimated at over 10,000
    Posted in Uncategorized | May 16th, 2018

    Tuesday, March 15, 2011

The official death toll from the devastating Japanese earthquake that hit on Friday is now nearing 1,900, while police officials say that it is all but certain the final toll will be at least 10,000 people dead.

Bodies are still being recovered—2,000 thus far in the Miyagi Prefecture alone. The official count of those missing has now reached 2,300, though in one town alone, an estimated half of the 17,000 person population is still unaccounted for. Approximately 350,000 people have been left without homes; shelters are providing housing for the moment.

Due to infrastructure damage, survivors in the hard-hit northeast coast of Japan are coping with limited resources, including food, water and electricity. In the Iwate Prefecture, a government official stated that the incoming goods from relief efforts are only about ten percent of what is necessary.

At the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant, a second explosion occurred on Monday at the building housing Reactor 3, following an explosion Saturday at the Reactor 1 building. Reactor 2 was also reported to have difficulties with its cooling system.

Bank of England governor warns housing market is biggest threat to UK economy

Bank of England governor warns housing market is biggest threat to UK economy
    Posted in Uncategorized | May 16th, 2018

    Sunday, May 18, 2014

The governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, has warned that the state of the housing market in the United Kingdom is the current biggest domestic threat to the country’s economy, due to lack of house building, and regulatory issues.

In an interview to be aired on Sky News today, he said the housing market is the “biggest risk” to the economy and has “deep, deep structural problems”. Of house building he said: “There are not sufficient houses built in the UK. To go back to Canada, there are half as many people in Canada as in the UK, twice as many houses are built every year in Canada as in the UK and we can’t influence that.”

“We’re not going to build a single house at the Bank of England. We can’t influence that. What we can influence […] is whether the banks are strong enough. Do they have enough capital against risk in the housing market?”

Carney also said the Bank of England would look into the procedures used to issue loans and mortgages to see if they were being granted appropriately: “We’d be concerned if there was a rapid increase in high loan-to-value mortgages across the banks. We’ve seen that creeping up and it’s something we’re watching closely.”

Kris Hopkins responded to Carney on behalf of the government, saying the government “inherited a broken housing market, but our efforts to fix it are working”. “We’ve scrapped the failed top-down planning system, built over 170,000 affordable homes and released more surplus brownfield sites for new housing. We’ve also helped homebuyers get on the housing ladder, because if people can buy homes builders will build them. Housebuilding is now at its highest level since 2007 and climbing. Last year councils gave permission for almost 200,000 new homes under the locally-led planning system and more than 1,000 communities have swiftly taken up neighbourhood planning. It’s clear evidence the government’s long-term economic plan is working.”

Earlier this month, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development called on the UK government to “tighten” access to the ‘Help to Buy’ scheme introduced by George Osborne and the coalition government in 2013. ‘Help to Buy’ has also recently been criticised by three former Chancellors of the Exchequer — the Conservatives Norman Lamont and Nigel Lawson, and former Labour Chancellor Alistair Darling. Darling said: “Unless supply can be increased substantially, we will exacerbate that situation with schemes like Help to Buy.”

CNN headquarters infected with computer worm, exaggerates global threat
    Posted in Uncategorized | May 16th, 2018

    Tuesday, August 16, 2005

CNN television news gave extensive coverage starting around 5:30 PM EST today to a new computer virus, a worm dubbed rbot.cbq. Its reporting suggested that it had the potential to become one of the most virulent and costly yet seen. This story was unique among cyber-attacks reports as the network apparently learned of the virus through becoming one of its early victims. Media organizations ABC and the New York Times were affected as well. Perhaps first-hand experience gave the studio more insight on the virus while providing an early notice. The coverage that followed, however, raises concerns that the network’s perspective was skewed, and that perhaps the damage even diminished its reporting ability.

CNN treated the story as a potential global crisis in its manner of coverage as well as in the advice given to viewers. For over 45 minutes, by one viewer’s tally, CNN devoted exclusive air-time to this topic. Home users were advised to turn off their computers for safety, while businesses were warned that if continued operations prevented this measure, they were at high risk. CNN.com sported a bold red headline above its usual content area, warning of the virus. CNN stated they were requesting reports from key sources across the nation, including California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

After some time, the network eventually obtained a Microsoft statement describing the virus as “low-impact” and only affecting computers running Windows 2000. CNN also learned from Microsoft that there was a patch available at Microsoft’s web site. CNN’s coverage contrasted with a lack of actual evidence of widespread infections, in this reporter’s view. Much of the discussion and advice came from experts probably not officially associated with CNN, so there is a question of who is at fault.

Chris Carboni of the Internet Storm Center speculated that “The fact that CNN, ABC and the NYTimes got it may be as simple as reporters from these organizations visiting the same event and connecting to an infected network. While a firewall may have protected their office network up to now, these infected laptops were able to take out the network from the inside once they connected back to it.”

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

Easy Tips for Putting Kids to Sleep

    by

    PaulB

Getting a baby to sleep often presents a major parenting concern. Babies don’t naturally take to sleeping through the night and most dads and moms have to work at ‘teaching’ their infant to sleep by setting up a sleep schedule for them.

For some parents, getting their children to sleep is no problem at all. For others, it invariably involves a major struggle. Here are some easy tips on putting your kids to bed: The first step to ensuring that your children take to their bed without much fuss is to establish a bedtime routine. When children sleep at the same time everyday, their body adapts to the cycle and they fall asleep easily. It helps to restrict activities that are physically or mentally stimulating, such as watching a television or computer screen or indulging in physical play, at least a couple of hours before bedtime. More sedate activities such as reading, drawing, or playing with stuffed toys are fine. It is a good idea to get your child in the mood for sleep by telling a bedtime story, or putting on some soft music. Besides helping them unwind, such activities form an association with bedtime in children’s minds, and help them to anticipate sleep. Take steps to make your child comfortable during the night. You may keep a favorite stuffed toy or object alongside to comfort your child. Ensure that your child’s clothes are comfortable-not too tight, and neither too hot or too cold. Once you have tucked your child in bed, leave the room. Let your child learn to settle down and fall asleep without depending on your presence to be able to do so. As newborn babies grow and develop, these are the various child development stages that they go through. Baby acne is characterized by the appearance of pimples or red bumps on the baby’s scalp, forehead, and especially the cheeks. A rough skin, along with pustules, whiteheads, and blackheads is also a common indication of baby acne

All You Need To Know About Obesity

    Posted in Dentist | May 15th, 2018

Click Here For More Specific Information On:

    Submitted by: Ruddy Gunawan

Most people did not know much about obesity. For them, obesity goes no deeper than a less than fashionable look, but the fact is, obesity is an epidemic, a disease spread fast in our world these days, across both the industrialized world and emerging economies.

What is obesity? Obesity means having too much energy that will become fat after you eating foods, on your body. Obesity puts a strain on joints and bones that have to sustain more weight than ever before, which leads to arthritis in the future. The weight also tends to make people lazier. It means more weight put on your body.

There are so many high cholesterol foods in our world. The lack of activity and high cholesterol brought by eating too much of the wrong food will impair the proper functioning of your heart and blood vessels. This caused high blood pressure, stroke and other blood and heart conditions. Excess fat also leads cessation of breathing during sleep, called apnea.

I know with patience and effort, we can cure obesity. As this diseases caused by obesity spreads over the land, so do the efforts for curing it increase. Read my review in my website to know more.

Now we should talk about how to recognizing obesity, shall we?

The definition of obesity is a BMI (body mass index) of above 30. What is BMI? BMI is a measure of a person s weight scaled according to height. This index serves to show the amount of fat stored on your body, and if your BMI is higher than 30, the worst is your exposure to certain diseases.

Many weight loss experts also warn that having a lot of fat stored around your waist increases the risk of developing diseases. Going beyond size 40 in men and size 35 in women means only trouble for your body in the future.

Anyway, unhealthy eating combined with sustained lack of activity caused obesity. When you are eating too much food, food will give more calories than your body need.

Eating habits are the first reason why people became obese. Lack of activity is the second reason. With neither the time, nor the inclination to control one s meals, it is no wonder people get fat all over the world, everywhere. About lack of activity, it is different from the past where people walking to go working. Now most people using car for transportation.

Obesity, unfortunately, also be inherited from family members who suffered from it. If your family has a history of obesity, then you would do well to watch your weight problem.

About Fast Foods, what do you think?

I am busy and you are busy, I know that. But do not let this change your eating habits. This does not mean that we have to eat everything fast food restaurants put before you. Hamburgers, cheeseburgers, etc. may look good, but they are fat too highly powered got your health. The problem is, a single burger is worth a whole meal, but your stomach will never filled by a regular burger, so it will keep asking for more, and you will eat more burgers despite the fact that your body does not need more burgers.

Many people try diets and fitness programs to lose a few pounds but when they hungry, they are returning to the old lifestyle and eating habits. It means that weight lost turns into weight regained and your body gets used to these lean times and it will harder for you to lose weight.

So what I need to do?

To all this you may add that following a diet for a longer period is hard, because you will always crave the forbidden foods. The fact that certain delicious foods are forbidden makes them that much more attractive. I know that. You need a successful diet. A successful diet means adjusting your lifestyle to your needs, especially by making time for more exercising. Please don t forget to control your eating habits. It is very important. However, you may need a natural weight loss pills to help you lose unwanted pounds.
