Saturday, April 17, 2010

Journalist, counselor, painter, and US 2012 Presidential candidate Joe Schriner of Cleveland, Ohio took some time to discuss his campaign with Wikinews in an interview.

Schriner previously ran for president in 2000, 2004, and 2008, but failed to gain much traction in the races. He announced his candidacy for the 2012 race immediately following the 2008 election. Schriner refers to himself as the “Average Joe” candidate, and advocates a pro-life and pro-environmentalist platform. He has been the subject of numerous newspaper articles, and has published public policy papers exploring solutions to American issues.

Wikinews reporter William Saturn? talks with Schriner and discusses his campaign.

  • Managing Entity With Reputation Management

    Submitted by: Mattie Adkins

Reputation management involves tracking an entity’s actions as well finding the view that other entities’ hold about that action. This is like a feedback loop, a reaction and reply to reputation damaging information.

    Entities

Entities refer to people, animals, businesses, locations, and even materials. Word-of-mouth and statistical analysis of many data points helps in the tracking and reporting of action. Entities which also include products and services can be affected by poor postings, negative feedback, bad testimonials, false scam accusations, and product reviews by fake users. This may be the work of disgruntled customers, jealous competitors, or sacked ex-employees.

    On The Web

Though, reputation management has been around for years, it has gained momentum only with recent advent of social media. For instance, a customer went to watch a movie and really hated it. The next day, he talked to his friends on how he wasted his time and money on the movie. Hearing him, his friends and their friends might take his opinion seriously and not go to watch that movie. This was how an opinion spread in earlier times. But, now, with globalization, we live in a world where information is disseminated very fast with the help of computers.

Widespread computing has seen a vast growth of reputation management online. There are many firms that report reputation using predefined criteria. The main purpose of these sources is to help people build good public relations. However, the threat of criticism on the social media always looms large. But, the criticism can generate benefits if it is reversed. Professional journalism and user-created content include material that is scrutinized online.

The greater the number of internet users and the more the content generated by them, the greater the desire to change the results. For instance, an online auction and shopping website used a feedback from consumer generated content. This helped the buyers and sellers to gain reputation which in turn helped other buyers and sellers to make informed decisions.

Reputation risk management becomes essential when companies get bad publicity. If publicity can be positive it can be utterly negative for a company’s reputation. In fact, sometimes it can be so strong that it can put a company out of business. Even a single link which speaks ill of a company’s products and services can be risky. For instance, a customer is searching for a particular service using specific keywords. If negative or false reviews appear in the first few search results, they can really get a bad impression of the company.

Using reputation management software cannot remove the reputation damaging search results but it can always push the search result to a position where a user would never browse. It is like making the image-tarnishing result invisible. Both companies whose reputation has been harmed and who are wary of future attacks can use this service.

Reputation management is a long-term campaign which seeks to root out bad elements that can spoil a business’s image.

Sweden’s Crown Princess marries long-time boyfriend

    ">
Sweden’s Crown Princess marries long-time boyfriend

    Monday, June 21, 2010

Sweden’s first royal wedding since 1976 took place Saturday when Crown Princess Victoria, 32, married her long-time boyfriend and former personal trainer, Daniel Westling, 36. The ceremony took place at Stockholm Cathedral.

Over 1,200 guests, including many rulers, politicians, royals and other dignitaries from across the world, attended the wedding, which cost an estimated 20 million Swedish kronor. Victoria wore a wedding dress with five-metre long train designed by Pär Engsheden. She wore the same crown that her mother, Queen Silvia, wore on her wedding day 34 years previously, also on June 19. Victoria’s father, King Carl XVI Gustaf, walked Victoria down the aisle, which was deemed untraditional by many. In Sweden, the bride and groom usually walk down the aisle together, emphasising the country’s views on equality. Victoria met with Daniel half-way to the altar, where they exchanged brief kisses, and, to the sounds of the wedding march, made their way to the the silver altar. She was followed by ten bridesmaids. The couple both had tears in their eyes as they said their vows, and apart from fumbling when they exchanged rings, the ceremony went smoothly.

Following the ceremony, the couple headed a fast-paced procession through central Stockholm on a horse-drawn carriage, flanked by police and security. Up to 500,000 people are thought to have lined the streets. They then boarded the Vasaorden, the same royal barge Victoria’s parents used in their wedding, and traveled through Stockholm’s waters, accompanied by flyover of 18 fighter jets near the end of the procession. A wedding banquet followed in the in the Hall of State of the Royal Palace.

Controversy has surrounded the engagement and wedding between the Crown Princess and Westling, a “commoner”. Victoria met Westling as she was recovering from bulemia in 2002. He owned a chain of gymnasiums and was brought in to help bring Victoria back to full health. Westling was raised in a middle-class family in Ockelbo, in central Sweden. His father managed a social services centre, and his mother worked in a post office. When the relationship was made public, Westling was mocked as an outsider and the king was reportedly horrified at the thought of his daughter marrying a “commoner”, even though he did so when he married Silvia. Last year, Westling underwent transplant surgery for a congenital kidney disorder. The Swedish public have been assured that he will be able to have children and that his illness will not be passed on to his offspring.

Westling underwent years of training to prepare for his new role in the royal family, including lessons in etiquette, elocution, and multi-lingual small talk; and a makeover that saw his hair being cropped short, and his plain-looking glasses and clothes being replaced by designer-wear.

Upon marrying the Crown Princess, Westling took his wife’s ducal title and is granted the style “His Royal Highness”. He is now known as HRH Prince Daniel, Duke of Västergötland. He also has his own coat-of-arms and monogram. When Victoria assumes the throne and becomes Queen, Daniel will not become King, but assume a supportive role, similar to that of Prince Phillip, the husband of the United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth II.

    Removable Wall Decor

    Posted in Timber | April 29th, 2021

    By Aurelia

Want to liven up the walls of your child’s bedroom but still having nightmare flashbacks about removing all that 70’s wallpaper? Look no further, because removable wall decor may be just the answer you’re looking for.

In the past, decorating walls involved pasting sheets of paper that were virtually impossible to remove. Not only that, but they were equally impossible to align. Painted wall murals became popular for a while, but they required a lot of work and a good degree of artistic talent. Many people used stencils to try to achieve a professional quality, but in the end you were left with a lot of effort for something that your child may grow tired of very quickly.

These days, vinyl wall decals come in all shapes and sizes. Wall decor and printing technology has merged to create great products that are full of vibrant color. Best of all, they are easy to apply and come off your walls just as quickly – leaving no glue, residue, or trace of a mark behind. This advantage alone would be worth it, but then factor in how fickle and changing a child’s tastes can be and that’s when you realize how important it is to get removable wall decor.

And these types of wall stickers and decals are not just for kids, either. Many varieties of removable wall decor are produced for living rooms and adult living spaces. Some very detailed wall murals and sticker creations can turn your living room into a deep forest, a rose-filled garden, or a window overlooking a beautiful lake. Online stores like the Wall Sticker Outlet has hundreds of options when it comes to removable wall decor, and they offer on all of their products.

Peel and Stick wall appliques can be applied to the walls of your home just as vinyl decals, either in conjunction to compliment a wall mural or by themselves. Going on without glue or paste, these removable decals can be used to spruce up accessories, cabinets, mirror frames, and anywhere else you can think of. Removable wall borders are also available, and can be used in any room of the house.

Another recent idea for removable wall decor has been the invention of the chalkboard surface. This fantastic product can be applied to any smooth surface and then written on, with normal chalk, just as if it were a blackboard. Slap one on the fridge and scribble your shopping list, or place one on your dorm room wall and leave a note for your roommate. The possibilities for wall chalkboards are endless, and they peel right off without glue or mess. They also come in a dry-erase surface as well, which can be written on with a dry-erase marker and then wiped clean with a cloth.

So don’t be afraid! Wall stickers and decals aren’t as scary as you think they might be. At least not today, in the age of removable wall decor.

Neanderthals ‘knew what they were doing’: Archæologist Dr Naomi Martisius discusses her findings about Neanderthals’ behaviour with Wikinews
    Posted in Uncategorized | April 29th, 2021

    Sunday, June 28, 2020

Last month, a study conducted by archæologist Dr. Naomi Martisius and other researchers concluded Neanderthals living in Europe tens of thousands of years ago were more sophisticated than previously thought. The now-extinct species used to carefully select bones from a particular animal species to manufacture their bone tools, the research showed. The research was published on May 8 in Nature’s Scientific Reports journal.

Dr Martisius and her team used five bone tools discovered from Neanderthals’ sites in southwest France for this research. Four of these bone tools were found in a site called Abri Peyrony and the other one was from Pech-de-l’Azé I. These tools were just a few centimetres in size and were about 50 thousand years old, Dr Martisius told Wikinews. Microscopy analysis of these bone tools called lissoirs (smoothers) suggested Neanderthals used these tools for working animal skin to leathers.

The study stated the fauna of the sites were primarily medium-sized ungulates such as reindeer, in one layer nearly 90%. Despite the overabundance of medium-sized ungulates, Neanderthals used ribs of large bovids for making lissoirs. Dr Martisius told Wikinews this was likely due to the physical characteristics of the bovid ribs, which were “thicker” and “stronger” as compared to the “thin and flimsy ribs” of reindeers. In order to check the origins of the bone tools, the researchers used a technology called non-destructive Zooarchæology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS).

Instead of damaging the bone artefacts in order to discover its origins, the researchers collected collagen from the plastic containers in which these artefacts were kept. Collagen is a type of protein. These bone artefacts were kept in plastic containers: some were kept for about five years, some for just a few months. During this time, the collagen proteins from bone tools were stuck to the walls of its plastic containers. The collagen samples collected from the walls of the containers are broken into smaller molecules called peptides by using a chemical enzyme called trypsin.

After the trypsin has broken collagen fibres into peptides, it is analysed using a technology called Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer (ToF MS). The assisting matrix is a coloured compound. The acidic peptide is combined with the matrix, vapourised, and peptides are released. Some of them are positively-charged particles which travel across a vacuum tube in an electric field. Depending on the weight of the peptides, these molecules reach the end of the vacuum tube at different instances of time, forming a spectrum. These graphs are like unique fingerprints of a species: they are different for different species of animals. Looking at the database of such graphs, taxonomic identifications of the collagen proteins came be made.

All four bone tools from Abri Peyrony gave positive results and showed that the bones were made from large bovids, even though reindeer were more abundant during that time. One of the advantages of using bovid ribs over reindeer’s thin ribs was the bovid ribs would be more resistant to breaking during flexion, Dr Martisius said.

Dr Martisius said such non-destructive ZooMS analysis was previously conducted, but for tools no older than a few centuries. She said such an analysis had never been previously conducted for artefacts so ancient.

Wikinews caught up with Dr Martisius to discuss this research in-depth.

A security camera at the First Judicial District courthouse in Santa Fe, New Mexico has captured an unidentified star shaped object that appears to spin, on camera. The object was recorded on Friday and some say it is a ghost, a reflection, or a piece of cottonwood fluff.

Alfred Arana, a Sheriff Deputy for Santa Fe County first discovered the object after he began to watch the surveillance recordings from the day before. He then requested Sgt. Vanessa Pacheco watch the recording to see what she thought. The object appeared at the time stamp of just before 7:30 a.m. (pacific time) on Friday morning.

“Generally, most people who’ve seen (the video) believe it is some type of spirit or ghost. It’s something unexplainable, (but) I don’t believe in ghosts so I don’t think that’s what it is,” said Sgt. Pacheco.

Public defender Earl Rhoads who works at the courthouse says that the object is totally explainable and that it is likely a piece of fluff from the cottonwood trees that stand close to the camera.

“I’m not willing to say it’s proof of paranormal activity. I think it’s totally explainable. I’m open to other possibilities, but my best guess at this point is that it’s a small floating object near the camera lens, probably a fluff of cotton from the cottonwoods nearby or an insect or something like that,” said Rhoads.

In the video, the object moves from the back door of the courthouse (in the upper right corner of the screen). It then floats, while rotating, shining and appearing in the shape of a star, toward the bottom right corner of the screen, past a police car, and then out of view.

When You Need An Orthodontist, You Will Find One In Hinsdale

    Posted in Dentistry | April 25th, 2021

    byAlma Abell

An orthodontist is a dental specialist; they work with patients who have misaligned or crooked teeth that require correction. When people think of orthodontics or an orthodontist, they automatically think of braces. Although there is a good reason for this, an orthodontist does more than that. Many treatment options and services are available in Hinsdale to rectify common problems.

    Braces

Braces are the primary service provided by orthodontists. Conventional braces consist of wires, brackets, and bands that are tightened as the treatment progresses. The controlled pressure placed on the teeth slowly move them into the desired position. Braces are used to straighten teeth. They are also used to correct an over or under bite, tooth crowding, or gaps between teeth. The majority of braces supplied in Hinsdale use metal brackets, but they are also available in ceramic and clear for patients who do not want them to be so visible.

    Spacers

An orthodontist will often suggest spacers be used when a child loses his or her baby teeth too early. Spacers ensure that the remaining teeth do not take over the space left by the lost tooth. Space must be maintained until filled by an adult tooth.

    Aligners

Aligners perform the same job as braces; they are used to straighten and align teeth. Aligners have some real benefits to the wearer as they can be removed for cleaning, they are difficult to see, and they tend to straighten teeth quicker than braces.

    Retainers

Once teeth have been repositioned using braces or aligners, the orthodontist will suggest that a retainer is used. A retainer is removable; it keeps teeth from returning to their original position. Retainers can be metal or plastic; they are worn at night and removed during the day.

If you are looking for an orthodontist, make an appointment with Oakbrook Orthodontics near Hinsdale. For further information of the professional services available.

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control
    Posted in Uncategorized | April 22nd, 2021

    Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.
